Zuboff’s 3 Laws (mid-1990)
- everything that can be automated will be automated
- everything that can be informated will be informated
- ALL DIGITALLY PRODUCED DATA that can be used for SURVEILLANCE &
CONTROL will be used for surveillance and control, in the absence of
countervailing rights, laws, contracts, rules, or sanctions.
Formulated in the mid-1990s, assuming the dominant economic paradigmand, grounded in 20 years of clinical observations
of “workplace computerization”, the 3 laws summarized and predicted behavior in
the economic domain.
Zuboff’s Fourth Law is a corollary of the first 3
- Information is only as useful to society as the institutions, rights, and laws
that govern its production and use.
