Physics of Life: A survey from the US National Academy of Sciences by William Bialek youtube

ABSTRACT
Once every 10 years, the US National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine survey the state of physics research. To make the task manageable, it is broken into separate volumes on astrophysics, condensed matter physics, etc.. In this cycle, for the first time, biological physics stands alongside these more traditional divisions of our subject. This marks the emergence of biological physics as a genuine branch of physics, not the application of physics to biology or an interdisciplinary amalgam. In this talk I will try to convey what we learned about the exciting state of the field today, the historical context out of which the field has emerged, and the challenges we face going forward.

49:00  when a new field emerges it really gives you a chance to rethink how we teach, not just in service of that field but in service of all the things that have happened since we thought about it last; and really, at least in the U.S., undergraduate physics education is now very far from how physicists think about the world; it really solidified ... or "solidified" might be a polite word, maybe "ossified"! Physics students, even at well resourced institutions, can emerge with a degree and not know that biological physics exists as a field.

59:10 How to differentiate between a biologist physicist and a biophysicist?

There's clearly a continuum of activity from thing which are very biologically motivated to thing wich are physics motivated.

1:00:00 The problem of active matter has his roots in trying to bild models for flocks and swarms and produce beautiful theoretical physics, and then people strarted to make real mesaurements on real flocks and swarms and it turns out that that real flocks and swarms have extraordirarily regular and precise and reproducible behavior that is in a different universality class than in the models that people wrote down, and there's still an active search for "how do I find the models that describe what is the underlying theory that descibe the real system?".

1:04:10 It's now understood that almost all the reaction involve transferring an hydrogen atom in enzymes, the proton in actually tunneling.

1:23:16 picking a single molecule of DNA and pulling on it, it's a beautiful experiment, also it's a physic experiment, the way you do is with magnetic traps or optical twewzers
